Planning Governance for the new academic year

Description:

This course is for Governance Professionals, Chairs of Governing bodies and Headteachers – together these three roles form the essential trio that steers school governance forward.

Getting set up well for the start of the year in school governance can make a huge difference to how the year progresses. Like any wall you need a good foundation to build from. In this course we’ll be going through a range of topics to put you in the best place for a successful year:

  • What have you got to put on the agenda for the first full governing board meeting? Have you checked the Code of Conduct and the Declarations of Interests forms? Are they right for your school?
  • What about structures and Terms of Reference for committees? Have you been through them to make sure that they are fit for purpose?
  • Is your Governance Guide updated? What should you include?
  • Have you identified governors who are interested in remaining or becoming Chairs? Do they really understand what they are letting themselves in for? Do you know what link positions are needed? What will be the scope of responsibility and expectations? Is this set out in a document?
  • Do you understand what skills your governing board collectively brings? When was the last skills audit? Where are the gaps, how do you fill them?

We’ll be going through some best practice planning steps and they’ll be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
