7372: Self Harm and Young People

This course is suitable for Family Support Workers, Teachers, Youth Workers, Social Workers and anyone who works in a voluntary or community group with young people.
This course has been designed to provide people with knowledge, understanding and skills of how to support a young person when they disclose or you suspect that they are self-harming.  The session will help you to understand why people self harm and how it may be displayed.  The course will enable delegates to explore strategies to support the young person, parents/carers and themselves.

Key learning objectives

1. Understand the reasons behind why young people self harm
2.     Recognise the range of ways that young people may self harm
3 Enable professionals to increase confidence in responding to people who self harm and what is ok to say.
4. Explore how to support young people through effective questioning, types of guidance and strategies to use
5. Explore how to support parents/carers and professionals when a young person is self-harming
6. Discuss levels of risk and referral pathways
