8185: Section 117 Training

A 1.5 hour session for social workers,  social care workers, advanced practitioners and managers who may supervise staff involved with citizens eligible for Section 117 aftercare. This is open to workers in all social care teams, it is not limited to those in mental health teams. The aim of the session is to provide an overview of Section 117 of the Mental Health Act (1983) and what this means for providing services to citizens who are eligible. The session will include examples of case law, which provide further explanation to the Act and Code of Practice.


Learning Outcomes:
-Understand the legal framework; what Section 117 aftercare is, and who it applies to
-Understand what S117 aftercare might include and how to review continuing eligibility 
-Understand the impact of S117 on other legal frameworks such as the Care Act (2014)
-Understand links to local joint policy, including how to record S117 aftercare plans and reviews
