Who is the course for?

Health care professionals and care staff who are directly
responsible for the handling of medication in their care
setting.

Course Requirements

Delegates are required to bring photo ID (Driving License,
Passport, Work ID etc.)
Delegates will be expected to utilise their current background
knowledge and experience in this area - Albeit within their
own workplace or the home environment.

Course Objectives
On completing this qualification candidates will:
• Outline the principles of key legislation relation to the prescribing, dispensing, administration, storage and disposal of
medication
• Give examples of how patient confidentiality can be maintained
• State the different classifications of medication
• Identify routes of entry for different medications
• Give examples of appropriate storage of medication
• Identify sources of information related to medicines
• Define the terms: Consent, Covert administration, Self-administration, Risk assessment
• Outline the principles of consent in relation to the administration of medication
• Explain the actions to be taken if an individual consistently refuses medication
• State the checks to be undertaken prior to the administration of medications
• Identify information that should be recorded in relation to the administration of medication
• Outline the principles of good record keeping
• Outline common reactions to medications
• Explain how to identify potential adverse reactions to medication and the actions to be taken
